URGENT NEED-MEN’S WINTER CLOTHING DRIVE FOR ISSAQUAH

As the winter months continue, there is an urgent need for men’s winter clothes for both the Union Gospel Mission and the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank. The collected clothes for men will be distributed to those in need to offset effects of the winter’s cold.

The Union Gospel Mission started in 1932 by a group of churches to assist in feeding those in need during the Great Depression. Today, the Union Gospel Mission also has programs for alcohol and drug abuse, dental and legal clinics, transitional housing, and women and children’s shelters. With their Rescue Vans, they distribute warm clothing to the homeless throughout the entire Puget Sound area.

Additionally, since 1982, the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank has been providing food, clothing and related services to individuals and families who find themselves in need of basic necessities. Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank strives to help people remain self-sufficient in their community and to maintain a sense of individual worth and dignity.

The 4-week long clothing collection is being conducted by four local churches throughout the Issaquah area. Recently, this group of Issaquah churches completed the very successful annual food drive for the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank through their “Serve Issaquah” association.

With the economy in a lengthy downturn, the effects of winter months are especially felt by those in need. An ample supply of warm clothing is a must just to get by each day.

To assist those in need, UGM is reaching out to cities in the Puget Sound area to support their Winter Rescue program by offering urgent help during this difficult time. UGM estimates that there are over 8,900 homeless sleeping out throughout King County on any given night.

Eighty percent of those that are homeless are men, but 80% of clothing typically donated, is for women and children. This Winter Men’s Clothes Collection in Issaquah is designed to assist in expanding donations and needs for the men.

The Men’s Winter Clothing Drive at the five churches will run for 4 weeks in February starting on Saturday the 4th. The men’s clothing donations can be left in barrels at the below listed churches. A receipt for tax purposes will be mailed to any donor that wishes to assign a value to their donation.

All items need to be new or gently-used with no torn or damaged goods. Warm clothing items, such as boots, hats/caps, gloves, pants, sweaters, tube-type socks, underwear in size 38-40 (or larger), ponchos, coats…all items need to be in larger sizes.

Downtown Issaquah’s flagship event, ArtWalk enters its 11th year in 2012. Every first Friday of the month from May through September, ArtWalk transforms downtown businesses into artists’ galleries for the night. From the time ArtWalk started in 2002, the crowd has increased twelve-fold to about 2,000 people per event. The number of artists who participated has tripled. At the September 2011 ArtWalk there were 60 artists represented. Last year, an estimated 10,000 people came into downtown Issaquah to see and purchase art, hear live music and show support for Issaquah’s historic downtown.

ArtWalk Issaquah is a lively, festive event with a variety of artistic styles and live music in multiple locations. The artists are paired with a participating Front Street area business and set up inside the business using wall space, easels, tables or other display arrangements. The artist must be able to set up before the 5:00 start time and be present with the artwork throughout the event. The artist can have an assistant to help with the show but the artist must be present for most of the event.
In most cases, the unsold artwork will need to be removed at the end of the evening.

Literally our wandering zombies couldn’t be held to the sidewalks – they ended up in traffic and were a real site to see. Some had branches sticking out of their bike helmets, raw meat hanging out of their mouths and there was blood everywhere – it was crazy! Apologies to our 911 operators – we will definitely be prepared for the large numbers and provide better zombie wranglers next year…
